Hello there!!!
Everyone is seeking for an easy and fast way to use 3d inside flash projects. At this time the most sounding 3D projects (open source) are 3D Papervision and Sandy 3D.
Looking to 2 demos, 1 from Sandy 3D and another one from 3D Papervision , i can say that the texture detail of 3D Papervision is higher than on Sandy. However, the rino is not moving, and maybe that’s why it seems to have higher detail. On the other hand, in Sandy 3D, the demo i’ve checked, have motion, one thing that i though could slower the loading rate, or the animation performance, but it didn’t. Load’s faster and don’t consume too many resources, which is 2 nice things to win the race. So, in other words, and to summarize,
- 3D Papervision it have a great texture detail;
- Sandy 3D, runs and loads faster, don’t consume too many pc resources, and shows to be easy to create motion;
Anyone have other opinions? Post it.
Brgds,
CP

[...] of Sandy to Papervision 3D but from my POV Papervision 3D is far more superior atm. Others tend to agree though another solution to Flash 3D looks like it’s on the horizon and it may be already too [...]

it’s sad but papervision wins hands down - it has some extremely talented and dedicated devlopers who are driving forwards with a real 3D engine implementation - Sandy came first but never really got past the ‘basic 3D’ stages - subscribe to the papervision mailing and you’ll get an insight into the awesome stuff the team are doing with it - it’s truly impressive - better than anyone though was possible from flash.
Oh and animations i being worked into papervision - check out the werewolf demo for an example - http://www.papervision3d.org/demos/md2/DemoMd2.swf
And some otehr coold demos in teh wilds - http://blog.papervision3d.org/2007/02/13/thank-you/
There is even more cool stuff on the mailing list too!

“Oh and animations i being worked into papervision”
I meant ‘ARE’ and not ‘I’ - nothing to do with me at all.

I tested both Sandy and PV3D using AS2 and I found the opposite.
With a similar scene in both ( 8 textured rotating cubes) sandy was a lot slower than PV3D.
I havent dont any comparisons with the AS3 versions so I cant say anything about that.
At the moment Sandy does have a more advanced API, particularly for animations but I think PV3D has such a momentum behind it at the moment that it will undoubtedly catch up.
BUT, i think the important thing is that they both exist and keep progressing. Choice is good for us all. So its wise to try them both and see which is appropriate for your own situation.

Dear All,
Sorry, but was not my intention to put down Papervison 3D for any reason. Personally i like more the PV3D, specially as it have an much higher detail. However the animations still need too much time to load. I just try to give my opinion for what I saw from the available demos. Moreover, Sandy is giving the possibility to download beta version, while PV3D still not available. I’m sure that the developers in PV3D project are talented and dedicated, as they are giving a gd proof that everything is possible.
Hope that soon we will be able to hear from you, that PV3D will launch the 1st BETA.

Hi and thanks for speaking about Sandy
Just a comment :
Sorry but as the main developper of Sandy I can’t agree with that. Sandy is, and has always been, more advanced mathematically. Jsut try to look at the recent addition of matrix use in PV3D, and you’ll see Sandy’s code (without any note btw…
Sandy is less impressive than PV3D, but why? Just because people are getting involved into PV3D. I released Sandy more than a year ago, and didn’t had this help. Believe me, we have some nice things to come with AS3, but we don’t have the community behind to make it grow faster..

Thomas

you compare an as3 demo ( papervision ) with an as2 demo ( sandy )
just for information

Having viewed both of these projects very soon after their respective launches, I feel the major reason that Papervision caught on so well was that the initial demos where so much more interesting.
Sandy is well written and designed, but was let down by uninspired “programmer art” samples. The animated cat was quite interesting, but was presented so small that it had little visual impact. Considering that its animation in AS2 was the performance bottleneck, I doubt that scaling it up 4 fold would have caused much performance loss.
My regards to both projects, Jake

I believe that they are two great projects and that they continue with time growing. to only have sandy or papervision3d is already a success. Luck and ahead to both
