As you probably know, Flash is a 2D program. However, there are a handful of open source 3D engines written in actionscript that allow real time 3D environments to be rendered within the flash player. Among these, is Papervision3D, which is probably the most powerful and widely adopted of the engines available.

In this tutorial, we will create a simple 3D gallery for a few photos. Before you get started, you will need to download Papervision3D, and make sure you have a class path within flash pointing to it’s location on your computer.

Flash CS3′s Actionscript 3 is 10x harder to use compared to Actionscript 2 of previous flash versions. But it can run 10x faster or even more, and it is a lot like Java/C++ in a way. And it is able to do awesome 3D effects by using API’s like Papervision or Away3D or Sandy. I have seen lots and lots of cool effects made by many creative people but it is a pity that almost all effects remain effects that is just “for show”. But yes, there are a handful of people actually using the 3D to make their websites and games. I have used papervision myself to make 2 games, namely Snowball 08 and Kondense.

To conclude, Flash CS3 is powerful and can render 3D with less than 10% lag, depending on how the developer codes the program, but some Flash users who venture into 3D start learning and stop and some start building cool effects and show off and stop. But I would suggest to not stop here. Start using the 3D to design websites, and then make applications and games using the 3D. So you are not only able to make something cool and say “Look!” but you are also able to make something in flash 3D that can and will be used/played by people.
